iLoveMakonnen ft Lil Yachty & Larry League – Sound Like Who? (Remix)
iLoveMakonnen invites rising artists Lil Yachty and Larry League for a remix.
A couple weeks ago iLoveMakonnen came through with the upbeat but still menacing track “Sound Like Who?” After declaring his own originality and questioning others’ on the original, we have an extended version with additional verses from Lil Yachty and Larry League.
The first half of the song remains the same. Lil Yachty submits an extended verse, continuing Makonnen’s criticism of unnamed unoriginal emcees. Larry League close things out by sharing a verse between their three members. Danny Wolf’s murky, upbeat trap beat provides good energy for all five emcees.
Magnificent new record from Nipsey Hussle, Young Thug, and Mozzy: “I Do This.”
The return of Nipsey Hussle has been one of the most enjoyable developments of 2016. His album, whenever it arrives, is sounding like it’ll be scary good. Today, he’s back with his fifth new record in the past month, “I Do This.” It’s also his second recent collab with Young Thug, following “Thug Life.” They’re proving to be an unexpectedly powerful pair. “I Do This” also features one of California’s most promising young rappers in Sacramento’s Mozzy. The track is produced by Mike Free, and it begins with an intro from one of Nipsey’s affiliates, Sinister Pook.
Though Nipsey is a gangsta rapper through and through, he’s recently been showing his softer, more vulnerable side, and that continues on “I Do This.” Both Nipsey and Mozzy relay the pressures of being one of the few to make it out of their home neighborhoods and how each day is a new fight to put on for those still confined to the struggle. Young Thug’s hook is manic, painful, and ultimately beautiful. To finish the track, he drops off a frenzied burst of inspiration that has got to be one of the more inventive flows of his career. What a record.
2 Chainz teams up with DJ E-Feezy for “Pocket Full of Money.”
DJ E-Feezy’s 2015 mixtape The Wolf of Wall Street featured a ton of huge features. Everyone from Lil Wayne to Meek Mill to Migos participated in the tape.. everyone in the game, it seemed, but 2 Chainz. E-Feezy covers his bases by inviting Tity Boi to spit on his new song “Pocket Full of Money,” released today in an HNHH premiere.
“Pocket Full of Money” presents 2 Chainz in a smokey sonic space with a pocket full of money and a desire to spend it. The whole song is basically an expansion on his “Watch Out” lyric “Got a pocket full of money, kinda hard to keep my pants up.” Give it a listen and share your thoughts on the latest from ol’ Chainz.
Rich Gang ft Jacquees, Birdman, Ralo, J-Soul & Derez – Pull Up
The new Rich Gang comes through with a London on da Track-produced banger: “Pull Up.”
Birdman is currently prepping his summer takeover, as he has a part in three projects that are supposed to drop in the next couple of months. In fact, his joint tape with Jacquees, Lost at Sea, was supposed to have arrived already, so hopefully he’ll still make good on his promise to release his solo album, Ms. Gladys, on June 24 and then the second Rich Gang compilation on July 1. A few days after sharing a new solo track and video, “Stunna,” Bird has now pot the spotlight on Rich Gang 2: The Lifestyle with a new five-man collab entitled “Pull Up.”
Though it was known that Bird has been revamping the post-Thug and Quan Rich Gang lineup, it was somewhat unclear as to whom is currently in the group. “Pull Up” shows that the current roster is a cross between R&B and street rap, with Jacquees and J-Soul in the former category and Ralo and Derez bringing the fiery bars. As always, Birdman is there to provide one of his always entertaining outros and also to pepper the track with the obligatory “Rich Gang” ad-libs. And don’t forget about THE backbone of Rich Gang then and now — that boy London on da Track.
For many, Rich Gang is still synonymous with the Atlanta duo who gave the world one of the best joint mixtapes of all time. “Pull Up,” however, is definitely the strongest Rich Gang sighting since Tha Tour Part 1, and it’ll be fascinating to see how the new movement develops over the summer.
Dave East and The Game bring together two traditions of gangsta rap for “Bad Boy on Death Row.”
A week after his last track, “Dead Man Walking,” Dave East is back with a strong new collab with The Game: “Bad Boy on Death Row.” There’s a good amount of kinship between the stylings of the Compton veteran and the Harlem youngster, and on “Bad Boy on Death Row,” they come through with a smooth, purist piece of gangsta rap. The title is fitting.
“Bad Boy on Death Row” is produced by Buda & Grandz, the New York duo behind East’s recent track “Money,” also one of his standout tracks of the year. This must’ve been an in-studio collab, as the back-and-forth raps are perfectly timed, and each rapper takes inspiration from the other’s respective home neighborhood. More cross-country collabs like “Bad Boy on Death Row” are certainly welcomed.
Yoshi Thompkins and Denzel Curry lament their excess of waves on “Du Rags.”
Rap banger maestro Ronny J has collaborated extensively with Miami’s rising star Denzel Curry. He has also collaborated quite a bit with another rising Miami rapper (and C9 member) named Yoshi Thompkins. The three of them unite on a new track called “Du Rags.”
This beat is relatively low key by Ronny J’s standards, but still energetic to affect a frantic flow from Thompkins and Curry, who lament/celebrate their excess of waves, a double entendre that refers to their wave cap and the fact their poppin. Ironically, both rappers have way too much hair for a wave cap to do any good.
